What CLEAN ME means

Sage machines count shots and switch on the CLEAN ME light after roughly 200 of them. It’s asking for a backflush: detergent pushed back through the group head and shower screen to dissolve the coffee oil that builds up there. That oil turns rancid and makes shots taste flat and bitter. Descaling is a separate job that removes mineral scale from the water path, on its own schedule.

How to run the cleaning cycle

  1. Make sure the water tank is full and the drip tray is empty.
  2. Put the grey silicone cleaning disc (it came in the box) into the single-wall one-cup filter basket.
  3. Place a cleaning tablet in the centre of the disc and lock the portafilter into the group head.
  4. Start the cleaning cycle. On the Barista Express, press and hold the 1 CUP and 2 CUP buttons together for about 10 seconds; the Barista Pro and touchscreen models have it in the menu. Check your manual if yours differs.
  5. The machine pulses water through for about five minutes and the CLEAN ME light goes off when it finishes.
  6. Remove the portafilter, rinse the basket and disc, and run a blank shot to flush any detergent before you make coffee.
