How to clean a milk frother
Steam wand, carafe system or standalone frother — milk residue is the enemy, and the routine takes seconds if you do it while everything’s still warm.

The 10-second rule (every single use)
Steam wands: purge and wipe immediately, while it’s hot. Blast steam for two seconds to clear the tip, wipe the wand with a damp cloth kept for the purpose. Milk dries onto a hot wand in under a minute and cooked-on milk is where every blocked tip and off-flavour starts.
Automatic frothers and carafes: rinse every part that touched milk in hot water straight after use — before you drink the coffee, not after. Most carafe parts are top-rack dishwasher safe (check the manual for the whisk and lid seals).
Weekly deep clean
1. Steam wand: unscrew the tip (most Sage and De’Longhi tips unscrew) and soak it in hot water while you wipe the wand shaft. Clear the holes with the pin tool from the box or a straightened paperclip.
2. Run a purge with the tip off to blast any milk out of the wand itself, refit the tip, purge again.
3. Automatic milk systems (bean-to-cup): run the machine’s milk-clean cycle — De’Longhi’s LatteCrema carafes have a CLEAN dial position that steam-flushes the spout; use it after every session and do a full strip-down weekly.
4. Standalone frothers: wipe the heating plate and whisk spindle — residue here is why frothers stop frothing.
If milk has dried on hard, soak parts in a solution of warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid, or a milk-system cleaner — never scrape non-stick coatings with metal.
The taste test
If your flat whites have started tasting faintly sour or “cheesy”, the milk path is the culprit — not the beans. Milk residue turns fast, and automatic systems hide plenty of tubing you can’t see. A weekly cycle plus per-use rinses keeps it neutral. And remember the frother shares a boiler with everything else: descaling on schedule keeps steam pressure strong, which is half of good microfoam.
Frequently asked questions
Why has my milk frother stopped frothing?
Nine times out of ten: milk residue. On steam wands it blocks the tip holes; on standalone frothers it coats the whisk spindle and heating plate; in carafe systems it narrows the air intake. A deep clean restores almost all of them. If steam is weak everywhere, the machine needs descaling.
Can I put milk frother parts in the dishwasher?
Carafe bodies, lids and whisks are usually top-rack safe — check your manual, as seals and non-stick interiors vary. Steam wand tips are better soaked and pinned by hand. Never submerge a standalone frother's base.
How often should I clean the milk system on a bean-to-cup machine?
Rinse or run the quick-clean cycle after every milk session, and strip the carafe down fully once a week. Milk residue builds in tubing you can't see, and it's the fastest way to make an expensive machine produce bad drinks.
