Do you need one?

If you live in a hard-water area — most of southern and eastern England — a filter is worth having. It softens the water going into the machine, so scale builds up more slowly and coffee tastes cleaner. In soft-water areas it matters much less. Our water hardness guide shows where you are.

A filter doesn’t mean you never descale. It slows the build-up; the machine still needs a descale when it asks. On De’Longhi machines, telling the machine a filter is fitted lengthens the descale interval automatically.

Fitting a new filter

  1. Soak the new filter in fresh water for a few minutes to release trapped air.
  2. If it has a date dial, set it to the month it should be replaced.
  3. Push it firmly into the holder in the tank, using the tool supplied if there is one.
  4. On De’Longhi machines, turn on the filter setting in the menu so the descale interval adjusts, and run the filter rinse if the manual lists one.
  5. Run one tank of water through before making coffee.

Genuine or compatible?

Genuine filters are designed for the holder and the machine’s settings, so they’re the safe default. Compatible filters can be a fraction of the price per filter, but fit and resin quality vary between brands. If you use one, check it seats firmly and watch for grit in the first tank.
