How to clean a De’Longhi brew group
The single most useful five-minute job on a Magnifica or Dinamica — and the one most owners have never done.

Why it matters
The brew group is where ground coffee is tamped, brewed and ejected as a puck. Every cycle leaves oils and fine grounds on it. Over weeks that residue turns stale, which dulls the taste of every cup, and in time it can make the group stiff or cause the machine to report errors. De’Longhi’s design lets you remove it without tools precisely so it gets cleaned often.
How to remove and clean it
- Switch the machine off at the power button and let it finish its shutdown rinse. Never pull the group while the machine is on or mid-cycle.
- Open the service door on the right-hand side of the machine.
- Press the two coloured release buttons (usually red) together and pull the brew group straight out by its handle.
- Rinse it under lukewarm running water. Don’t use washing-up liquid and don’t put it in the dishwasher: detergent strips the lubricant from the moving parts.
- Leave it to air dry, or pat it dry.
- While it’s out, brush or vacuum loose grounds out of the compartment and wipe the inside of the door.
- Slide the group back in until it clicks into place, then close the door. If the door won’t close, the group isn’t fully seated.
Brew group won’t go back in?
This almost always means it’s been moved out of its rest position. Look at the side of the group: there’s a lever and reference marks. Push the lever down firmly until the marks line up, then try again. Don’t force it. If it still won’t seat, check the compartment for a lodged coffee puck or a build-up of grounds at the bottom.
How often
Weekly with daily use, and any time the machine asks for it. Every few months, check the moving parts look dry rather than slick; De’Longhi sells a food-safe lubricant for the group if it starts to stiffen. The rest of the routine is descaling when the light asks and changing the water filter every couple of months.

Can I put the De'Longhi brew group in the dishwasher?
No. Dishwasher detergent strips the lubricant from the moving parts and can warp plastic. Rinse it under lukewarm water only.
How do I know if my brew group needs cleaning?
If you’ve never done it, it does. Signs include weaker or more bitter coffee, wet or crumbly pucks, and grounds collecting in the compartment.
Why won't my brew group go back in?
It has moved out of its rest position. Push the lever on its side down until the reference marks line up, then slide it in. Also clear any grounds from the bottom of the compartment.
Do Philips and Sage machines have removable brew groups?
Most Philips and Saeco bean-to-cups do, and they’re cleaned the same way. Sage machines are espresso machines with a portafilter instead, which is cleaned with a backflush cycle.
