De’Longhi descale light won’t go off

Why the light stays on
De’Longhi bean-to-cup machines count the water that passes through them and switch the descale light on at a threshold set by your water hardness. The count only resets when the machine sees a full programme run from start to finish: the descaler phase and the fresh-water rinse. Anything that cuts the programme short leaves the counter where it was, so the light stays on even though you’ve just poured descaler through it.
The five causes, in order of likelihood
- The rinse phase didn’t register. When the machine asks you to rinse and refill the tank, it needs filling to the MAX line. A half-filled tank can run out before the rinse completes. Run the programme again with descaler and let the rinse finish.
- The cycle was interrupted. Switching off mid-cycle, a power cut, or the drip tray filling up and being removed can all stop it. Start again from the beginning.
- The water hardness setting is too high. If the light returns every couple of weeks, the machine may think your water is harder than it is. Test it with the strip in the box (or check your supplier’s postcode checker) and set the hardness level in the menu to match. Our UK water hardness guide shows typical levels by region.
- The water filter setting is off. On models with a filter, telling the machine a filter is fitted lengthens the descale interval. If you’ve removed the filter but the setting still says it’s installed, or the reverse, the timing is off.
- You descaled outside the programme. Running descaler through by hand (hot water spout, coffee cycles) cleans the machine but never resets the counter. Only the built-in descale programme does.
The fix, step by step
- Remove the water filter from the tank if one is fitted.
- Fill the tank with descaler to the level the manual gives (EcoDecalk has A and B marks on most De’Longhi tanks).
- Put a container of at least 1.5 litres under the coffee spouts and the hot water or steam spout.
- Start the descale programme. On most button models that’s a long press on the descale or OK button; screen models have it in the maintenance menu.
- When prompted, rinse the tank and fill it with fresh water to MAX. Empty the drip tray and container if they’re nearly full, but don’t switch off.
- Let the rinse run to the end. Some models ask for a second rinse fill: do it.
- Refit the filter and check the filter and water hardness settings are right.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reset the De'Longhi descale light without descaling?
Not reliably. On current models the light is tied to the water counter, and the counter only resets when a full descale programme completes. Running the programme with plain water will clear it, but it doesn’t descale the machine, so only do that straight after a proper descale that didn’t register.
Why does my De'Longhi say descale again after a week?
Usually the water hardness setting is higher than your actual water, or the filter setting doesn’t match reality. Test your water and set both correctly.
Is it bad to ignore the descale light?
Over time, yes. Scale builds up in the thermoblock, so coffee comes out cooler and slower, and heavy build-up can block it. It’s the most common cause of avoidable repairs.
Does the Dedica have a descale programme?
The Dedica flashes a descale warning, and most versions have a descale mode you start from the buttons; the manual gives the exact combination for your model. Older and simpler pump machines are descaled by running solution through by hand.
